Staff Reviews

The title of this book says it all, and it unpacks some pretty heavy things.  We have racism, capitalism, tribalism, protest, and government.  I’m probably missing at least another handful of different ideas as well.  This graphic novel coming in at about 64 pages can be read over and over and over, while never arriving at one conclusion or another.  It is essentially a springboard for deep thought.  On the other hand, it could be a metaphor for a million screaming voices without one being correct, superior, or better than another.  Can all ideas exist at once without the capacity to understand two at one moment?
I loved Ben’s color palate; black, and peach are used to transform this world into essentially a shade of grey situation.  These are the only colors, so do any of them really matter.  It also helps control the chaos that is running across the pages. I would have to say the curves of the city and the characters are soft enough that while madness is happening the illustrations don’t seem to scary or sharp.  The violence seems almost comical until you take a step back and line it up with what’s happening in the real world.  I think Sports is Hell would be a fantastic jumping off place for a whole semester on the different systems that we participate in as human beings.  I encourage you to step into this fantasy land and experience the questions that Ben Passmore has exquisitely laid down a beautiful piece of art.
