The world has not been kind to Julia Bishop as of late. Her brilliant Wall Street strategist husband turned out to be the "Bernie Madoff of the Mid-West" and before killing himself managed to bankrupt not just he and Julia, but also everyone they knew. Simply put, Julia wants nothing more than to disappear.  This is exactly what she is offered when she meets Adrian Sinclair.  Adrian's mother, who before performing a disappearing act of her own was a world famous author, is aging and in need of a companion.  Adrian believes Julia is just the person for the job and Julia has little reason to argue and every reason to take the offer. She soon finds herself living in the Sinclair family estate of Havenwood where there is something more going on than "a bump in the night."  As mysterious as the house's history is, even more mysterious is how and why Julia was chosen to be Mrs. Sinclair's companion.  Perhaps it wasn't the happy coincidence she believed it to be after all.

Recently widowed and rendered penniless by her Ponzi-scheming husband, Julia Bishop is eager to start anew. So when a stranger appears on her doorstep with a job offer, she finds herself accepting the mysterious yet unique position: caretaker to his mother, Amaris Sinclair, the famous and rather eccentric horror novelist whom Julia has always admired...and who the world believes is dead. When she arrives at the Sinclairs' enormous estate on Lake Superior, Julia begins to suspect that there may be sinister undercurrents to her "too-good-to-be-true" position. As Julia delves into the reasons of why Amaris chose to abandon her successful writing career and withdraw from the public eye, her search leads to unsettling connections to her own family tree, making her wonder why she really was invited to Havenwood in the first place, and what monstrous secrets are still held prisoner within its walls.
