The children are our future, and this book gives me such hope for what our world can become. Even though this is a board book meant for kids, there are a lot of adults that could learn a few things from this important read.
“Antiracist baby is bred, not born”; just like racism is not something a person is born with, it is something that is taught. Antiracist Baby highlights nine fundamental steps to make equity a reality, a few steps being:
•Open your eyes to all skin colors. If you claim to be color-blind, you deny what’s right in front of you.
•Use your words to talk about race. No one will see racism if we only stay silent.
•Point at policies as the problem, not people. Policies don’t always grant equal access.
•Confess when being racist. Nothing disrupts racism like when we confess the racist ideas that we sometimes express.
The illustrations are wonderful and complement Kendi’s text so well by showing a world populated by people of various skin tones, identities, orientations, religions, and abilities. Publishers Weekly summarized this beautiful book: “Though the advanced diction gears the volume more toward caretakes than infants themselves, the book will nonetheless serve as a mindful companion for families striving together toward a more equitable future.”
