This one is for my fantasy AND sci-fi readers of old! By that I mean everyone who loves the classics a la Terry Pratchett… perhaps if a little more serious than that. If Robin Sloan sounds familiar to you, that is because he is also the author of Sourdough: Or Lois in Her Adventure in the Underground Market and Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. As I mentioned, this tale is one of the best fantasy and sci-fi mashups out there! We are in the future, 11, 753 years, and we are hitching a ride with a young lad named Ariel. Now when I say “we” I mean we are viewing the world from a sentient piece of technology living inside of our young leading character. You read that correctly! The entire story is told through the “eyes” of a being crafted by humans to record all of human history. They exist within a human organism and can even communicate with said host by means of a voice in their “head.” Their entire purpose is to record and store information, creating the greatest tome of human history! Once their host dies, they will simply slip into the body of the next living person to cross their path. Do not be alarmed! It is not an invasive exchange, and most people do not even notice it has happened except for a slight itching sensation along their shoulder blades… and the small fact of a new consciousness suddenly being in their heads. I’m getting ahead of myself! We find ourselves, along with our very smart anthologist, vastly into the future, yet things are… interesting. These beings live in a castle, have a feudal society, while also having archaic handheld video games, airplanes, active psychics, and last but not least, dogs that talk. Out loud. Regularly. As I said; a la Terry Pratchett!
It’s a wild ride and one of the most enjoyable and creative reads I have adventured into in awhile! If you’re looking to start off the summer with a bit of fun, look no further!

Robin Sloan expands the Penumbraverse to new reaches of time and space in a rollicking far-future adventure.

In Moonbound, Robin Sloan has written a novel with the full scope and ambitious imagination of the very books that lit the engines of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore: an epic quest as only Sloan could conceive it, mixing science fiction, fantasy, good old-fashioned literary storytelling, and unrivaled enthusiasm for what’s next.

It is eleven thousand years from now . . . A lot has happened, and yet a lot is still very familiar. Ariel is a boy in a small town under a wizard’s rule. Like many adventurers before him, Ariel is called to explore a world full of unimaginable glories and challenges: unknown enemies, a mission to save the world, a girl. Here, as they say, be dragons. But none of this happens before Ariel comes across an artifact from an earlier civilization, a sentient, record-keeping artificial intelligence that carries with it the perspective of the whole of human history—and becomes both Ariel’s greatest ally and the narrator of our story.

Moonbound is an adventure into the richest depths of Story itself. It is a deeply satisfying epic of ancient scale, blasted through the imaginative prism one of our most forward-thinking writers. And this is only the beginning.

Robin Sloan grew up in Michigan and now splits his time between San Francisco and the internet. He is the author of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore and Sourdough.
