Imagine getting the chance to read a book that helped define an entire genre, along with the author that wrote it.  Think of it: reading Fahrenheit 451 with Bradbury or In Cold Blood with Capote.  That’s what it feels like to read this new edition of Kitchen Confidential.  It’s like the commentary is turned on.  Interspersed within the original text are hand written notes by Bourdain.  Often, these notes are poking fun at himself and criticizing his own bravado.  Other times, he’s sorry he showed such restraint, “I’d like to go back in time and punch this cocksucker.”  He corrects assumptions he made, gives further cooking tips, and even provides a film recommendation, all handwritten.  There are even some impressive sketches.  As someone who treasures the original text I find this new edition both thrilling and haunting.  It’s also a must own.  Original edition review here.

— From Matt

A new, deluxe edition of Kitchen Confidential to celebrate the life of Anthony Bourdain. The book will feature a brand new introduction, a Q&A with Ecco publisher and Bourdain’s long-time editor Daniel Halpern. Interior pages are hand-annotated by Anthony Bourdain himself. The interior will also feature a brand new drawing by Ralph Steadman.

Almost two decades ago, the New Yorker published a now infamous article, “Don’t Eat before You Read This,” by then little-known chef Anthony Bourdain. Bourdain spared no one’s appetite as he revealed what happens behind the kitchen door. The article was a sensation, and the book it spawned, the now classic Kitchen Confidential, became an even bigger sensation, a megabestseller with over one million copies in print. Frankly confessional, addictively acerbic, and utterly unsparing, Bourdain pulls no punches in this memoir of his years in the restaurant business—this time with never-before-published material.

About the Author

Anthony Bourdain was the author of the novels Bone in the Throat and Gone Bamboo, the memoir A Cook’s Tour, and the New York Times bestsellers Kitchen Confidential, Medium Raw, and Appetites. His work appeared in the New York Times and The New Yorker. He was the host of the popular television shows No Reservations and Parts Unknown. Bourdain died in June 2018.
