EventsWe are forever working towards bringing to Petoskey those authors into whose brains we know you'd love to sneak a peek! Whether children's or adult, fiction or non, local or national, we have had visiting authors from all publishers, all corners of this country, and all walks of life. And we're very pleased to say that publishers and authors alike are pleasantly surprised with the number of fans they have in Northern Michigan.
If there is a writer that you are just crazy about, it can never hurt to get on his or her (or the publisher's) website and say, "Hey, you should come to McLean & Eakin!" We'll take it from there.

Mary Ellen Geist: Cocktail Hour, Speaking and Book Signing
Monday, August 18th from 6:30 to 8:30pm
Last fall, Mary Ellen Geist came into McLean & Eakin looking for a copy of the eminent neurologist and author, Oliver Sacks, latest book. I handed her a copy of Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain, and in exchange, she told me a story. . .
Mary Ellen had gotten wind that Dr. Sacks was working on a book regarding the relationship between music and the brain. She sent him a note about her father, his progressing Alzheimer's, and his uncanny ability to recall all the words and tunes to the myriad of songs he had performed with his longtime a capella group. Something about this story sparked an interest for Dr. Sacks and, low and behold, upon publication, an excerpt of Musicophila is devoted to the befuddling and complex condition of Woody Geist's brain. Dr. Oliver Sacks has penned the forward to Mary Ellen Geist's book, Measure of the Heart: A Father's Alzheimer's, A Daughters Return.
Needless to say, the story contained in these pages is as touching and delicately rendered as it ought to be. It is not only a portrait of this father-daughter relationship, but an account of introspection, and a beacon of hope and encouragement for those who have a loved one afflicted with Alzheimer's. This is an evening not to be missed.
Tickets for this event are no charge, but reservations must be made in advance. Please contact us today, to secure a spot!

Denise Brennan-Nelson: Creativity Workshop and Book Signing
Friday, August 29th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm
We look forward to this time every year or so, when we are able to welcome Denise Brennan-Nelson back to the store! Not only is Ms. Brennan-Nelson a first-class author, but she is also an energetic and passionate motivational speaker who will be leading a creativity workshop, open to teachers, parents and children.
The event is designed to show participants how to make room for creativity in their daily lives. Her latest picture book, Willow, "focuses on an adult's loss of creativity." Miss Hawthorn is the elementary school art teacher who projects her narrow world view onto the students. In the story, most kids turn in the assignment that is expected, but not Willow, whose creative veiw of life is ultimately appreciated by her teacher.
Michael Harvey: Cocktail Hour, Speaking and Book Signing
Friday, August 29th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm
Michael Harvey thrilled hard-boiled mystery lovers and Chicago afficianados alike with his 2007 debut novel, The Chicago Way. Now Harvey returns to the always fierce and thrilling life of PI Michael Kelly in his second book, The Fifth Floor. Harvey has a knack for recalling vividly the city's past and present -- with politicians and mob bosses in league, as well as a mystery dating back to the Great Fire of 1871 -- and he'll certainly keep you guessing and second-guessing until the end. This is a cocktail hour you won't want to miss!
