I appreciate any cookbook that is as enjoyable to read as its recipes are to make, savor and share. Peter Berley is a subtle and ever-respectful artist of vegetarian and vegan cuisine, offering plenty of kitchen lore, terminology, sugar and fat alternatives, seasonal menus, and truly palate-pleasing dishes to which I've returned again and again. (And this coming from a girl who likes her steaks medium-rare!)

Dusoulier's Chocolate & Zucchini blog has long held the position of my homepage when I sign online, and for good reason; she is a spirited food writer and cook who discovered her passion for French cuisine when her husband's job brought her on a hiatus to the states. Her recipes, now available in book form, offer the most unexpected flavor combinations, with brilliant success. Wine pairings accompany all of the recipes, as well as variations for those hard-to-find ingredients. No kitchen should be without this long-awaited collection! Recommended by Katie

Most of us have moved past the old adage, "You are what you eat." In M.F.K. Fisher's case, however, it is perhaps quite the appropriate phrase, but can also be expanded to include, "You are what you eat, with whom you eat, where you eat, how you eat..." All this and more Fisher discovered when she and her husband made their way around Europe in the 1940's. A food writing classic about the joys of cooking! Recommended by Katie

I've goodwilled every other baking cookbook since adding this tome to my collection, and I don't think I'll ever replace it. Surely nothing else compares to the invaluable advice regarding everything from sweets to savories, morning quick loaves to overnight bread puddings, recipes for the novice to those for the four-star pastry chef. Sur la Table proves, once again, that baking is a process born of patience and love -- ending with a product that exemplifies just that! Recommended by Katie

I'll be the first to admit that I thought my personal Jamie Oliver infatuation had come and gone. How wrong I was! I read this cover-to-cover in two days, savoring every "lovely crisp" and "Rock 'n Roll" and "trip to my veg patch" he could throw at me. Less a cookbook, and more an homage to the seasons in nature (complete with invaluable gardening advise) and the innumerable possibilities using homegrown flavors, you too may rediscover your crush. Les Dames D'Escoffier was founded in response to August Escoffier's all-male (service a la russe) association. It remains to this day, an impressive collective of female culinary professionals who believe that the most significant and wholesome meals are those shared with family and friends. In this part cookbook, part history, the editors have compiled the signature dishes of the women who have molded our food ideology. Recommended by Katie

This is the old classic with the classics and lots of other great recipes. My husband received this cookbook from his mother just after we had gotten married (I think he may have hinted to her about my cooking). Well, they were right, I was not a cook. I began my simple search for the recipes that my mother and his mother had made. They were there. My all-time favorite Macaroni and Cheese recipe is here. I love the Oven-Fried Chicken as well. The Pizza recipe we have used for ages on many Sunday evenings. This is a basic cookbook I go back to again and again. This newest edition has on section on slow cookers and 20-minute meals. These are meals I trust. I would recommend this to the newlyweds and the newly graduated. Recommended by Stephanie

In true Patricia Wells' fashion, the famed cooking duchess has collected an extensive array of recipes, all simple as can be, all distinctly French market-influenced, and all in celebration of vegetables! Oh! And all delicious, of course. And for those entertaining equal parts vegetarians and those who aren't, this cookbook has menu options to satisfy both, and which complement each other beautifully at the table. Bon Appetit! Animal friendly and so tasty that even diehard milk and egg cupcake-aholics may find themselves on their knees and paying homage to these delightful delicacies. Don't believe that you'll fall for the sugary-soy bites of heaven? Just ask the M&E staff -- they've sampled a few. . .(The Gingerbread with Lemony Buttercream Frosting, and the Green Tea Cupcakes are my personal weaknesses.) -Katie
